The Carlsbad Garden Club is involved in a new fund-raising opportunity at the invitation of Lisa Rodman, Director of the Discovery Center of the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation (AHLF). Eagle Scout Tyler White constructed a wonderful wooden cart for us to display plants donated by members for sale. The cart is located under the "living wall" donated by the North Coast Community Church. Proceeds from the sale of the plants will go to the CGC scholarship fund for a deserving horticultural student at Mira Costa College. Member Mary Hassing, our liaison with the AHLF, has organized a watering and tidying-up brigade to keep the plants happy and blooming prior to sale.
Carlsbad Garden Club Members Volunteering @ the Discovery Center:
CGC members Linda Sterrett and Mary Hassing team up with Helene Bell (landscape architect and docent) and Jaden Rowley, a Junior at Carlsbad High School, at the Agua Hedionda lagoon to remove weeds and non-native plants which created a beautiful pathway leading to the lagoon that will be in full bloom next spring with native California poppies.
CGC members were involved last March, during the World Water Day events held at the AHL Discovery Center.

Ellen McGrath-Thorpe, our returning webmaster, is the third member of the Carlsbad Garden Club to be awarded Lifetime Membership. Even before she joined the CGC, she began what has become our Discovery Group, a small sub-group which meets monthly to learn about members' gardens or other places. As publicity chair, she encouraged the CGC to become active on the web which has led to this website. Ellen served as vice president (2006-8), president (2008-10) and treasurer (2012-14). She has encouraged our contributions to various Carlsbad community activities such as school gardens and the Boys and Girls Club garden in Rancho Carlsbad. Ellen also founded North County Petals for Patriots, now in its eighth year, and maintains the Palomar district of the California Garden Clubs' list of speakers and destinations.

Mira Costa Scholarship Winners AND
Guest Honorees at November 7, 2015 Club Meeting
Our Scholarship Chair Wendy announced that the two winners from the Mira Costa Horticulture Department are both residents of Carlsbad. Because of the Jubilee, the amounts were $1025 each.
Jennifer Gerson is very passionate about community gardening as a result of her volunteer work in West Africa, with Victory Gardens San Diego and with her position as Garden Coordinator for the new "World Garden" being designed and installed on their campus. She has completed the Master Composter Program and is currently enrolled in the Master Gardener Program.
Adam Quigley has been involved in the world of Agriculture all of his life since both of his parents work in the industry. His father and he are currently involved in encouraging drought tolerant California natives program among his nursery customers. He completed an internship in Holland working in greenhouses while still in high school.
The Carlsbad Garden Club wishes both of them success in their studies and look forward to meeting with them at our November Club Meeting. After that meeting we were even more pleased with Mira Costa's choices for our Scholarship Program. They were both dynamic speakers and should do very well once they have finished their studies.
The Carlsbad Garden Club is a 501(c)3 Club #CO776898, and our FEIN is #77-0720491
