Our Group will provide floral arrangements in November and December, 2017.
Petals for Patriotswas formed to show gestures of appreciation to our United States Military Wounded Warriors. Started by David Root, and with the assistance of the Mission Hills Garden Club, fresh floral arrangements are delivered to Balboa Naval Hospital Wounded Warriors and other Military Facilities in San Diego once each month.
Under the Leadership of Ellen McGrath-Thorpe, who adopted the idea for the North County Palomar District, the Carlsbad Garden Club along with other district clubs and an independent club began to deliver fresh floral arrangements to the Camp Pendleton Wounded Warrior Battalion - West on December 15, 2008. Deliveries continue on the third Thursday of each month on a rotating schedule with participation by each of the North County Garden Clubs for 2 months in a row who have volunteered to participate in the project.
Many thanks to David Root, The Mission Hills Garden Club, Brian Perry at Dos Gringos and the volunteers who consistently brighten the rooms of our Wounded Warriors in the San Diego area.
This Project still continues although there are changes. Instead of 30 beds, the new facility has 200 beds. As of 2016 4 District garden clubs, Carlsbad, Fallbrook, San Dieguito Clubs, and Mira Costa Horticulture Society have been joined by the independent (non District affiliated) Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club and the San Diego African Violet Society. All of these Clubs are continuing into 2017. Instead of 15 small blue vases, we now bring 3 large floral arrangements and a seasonal fruit basket. Dos Gringos continues to donate all of the flowers and the enthusiasm remains the same.
This is from the very first time that the North County P4P Group met. David Root is the man who came up with the idea after realizing how isolated Wounded Warriors are. They are separated from their families in most cases, and from the Unit that they trained and served with when they were wounded. At this meeting, I invited members of the other Garden Clubs who had joined in this effort. It was one of the few rainy days in December 2008, but we all came together and it was a wonderful day.
The pictures on the left are samples of what we bring out to the Hospital for Wounded Warriors at Camp Pendleton. The arrangement is affected by the flowers donated by Dos Gringos, the shape of the vases and the talents of those Members who volunteer their time to do this.
When we wanted to "do more" and bring baked goods, we were told that that was not allowed so as to not interfere with their medical treatment. We were however allowed to bring fruit, so we started to bring fresh fruits.
A Floral Trade Convention was held at the La Costa Spa and Resort. David Root arranged for their demonstration flowers to be given to us for the Petals for Patriots Program. It was very involved: venues had to be located and volunteers had to be found who could quickly come together, make the arrangements, and then deliver them to 5 different sites associated with this Program. One of these sites was at Dos Gringos who offered their facility and volunteers came from all over San DiegoCounty. It was like being let loose in a candy shop. There were flowers of every kind and lots of vases donated by the Garden Clubs and Dos Gringos. 70 Floral Arrangements were made and delivered to CampPendleton. We continued to make arrangements and they were delivered to many people in various facilities, etc. What a great opportunity!
Our Club was assigned November (top picture) and December (bottom picture) in 2013. In both months we also donated baskets of fresh fruits. In December, they were especially thrilled to get the fruit since all they had had donated that day were bakery goods!
You can see the difference in the arrangements thanks to the different flowers donated by Dos Gringos. We are frequently given sunflowers with a variety of greens to work with, but in December, Joan arranged to give us proteas, "Christmas Tree greens" and "golden twigs".
Our Group in November was Cindy, Ellen, Maxine and Rita. In December, we had 2 different Members, Donna S and Wendy, come to arrange with Ellen and Rita, I can truly say no matter who comes to help, we all have a great experience!
The North County Petals for Patriots Garden Clubs received a request from the Community Coordinator from Camp Pendleton on 1/7 that a dance was being held for the Wounded Warriors on 1/10/14 and could we please provide centerpieces. Our Club came through! Sue K-C offered her home for the arranging to take place, while Cindy took responsibility for obtaining the flowers from Martha's Wholesale Flowers in Carlsbad. Maxine gathered vases and other supplies from Rita and Ellen. Donna S and our very newest Member, Madeline, all the way from Temecula rounded out the crew who made the arrangements. Check out the pictures...you can tell they were having fun! Sue and Donna drove the arrangements out to the Camp. You can see the final results on the right.
The Carlsbad Garden Club brought the floral arrangements in July and August of 2015, and May and June of 2016.
