The Discovery group of the Carlsbad Garden Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 1:00p unless otherwise noted. Discovery is a part of the CGC that either gathers at a member’s home or goes on a field trip. The purpose of Discovery is to address design problems, irrigation, pests, give plant suggestions, etc. There is a range of experience and knowledge in Discovery so sometimes we teach and sometimes we learn. This group is open to members and their guests only. Contact Helena through firstname.lastname@example.org

Thanks to Helena's research we toured Coastal Roots Farm, 441 Saxony Road, Encinitas yesterday. This was the last land owned by the Ecke Family and part of a big controversy in 2012. (photo 1) The land was purchased by the Leichtag Foundation as a nonprofit community farm and education center.
Despite the rain, we had a wonderful time. Most of the time we looked like Madeline and her classmates in Paris! (photo 2)
The chickens who had more sense than we did to stay out of the rain (photo 3) provide eggs and contribute to their compost production. On 28 of the 67 acres, the greenhouses are leased to various groups. All of the crops grown in the ground use sustainable farming methods including hydroponics and they give away more than 50% of the produce. They have a 10 acre "food forest" and a vineyard. Their fruit stand is open Thursdays from 4-7 with a suggested amounts to donate. Public tours are scheduled for the last Sunday of every month at 1PM. They manage a food lab affiliated with the Encinitas school system.Their goal is to become a model for community farming and creative Jewish expression. You can check out their website, coastalfarms.org for more information and a schedule of upcoming events as well as classes.
